Italy's top designers, is chairing this year's


The Graduate Fashion Week Gala on Wednesday June 9th includes the annual awards ceremony, with prizes given for the best womenswear, menswear and knitwear, among others, as well as the prestigious River Island Gold Award, worth £20,000. A new prize has been added to this year's list, the Inspiration Award, which is being voted for by GFW students, and will acknowledge the contribution to fashion by an inspirational figure, such as an actor, musician, designer or model. Alberta Ferretti, one of Italy's top designers, is chairing this year's judging panel.
Graduate Fashion Week ends on Thursday June 10th, with its Education Day, now in its third year and proving a huge attraction for 14-18 year-olds interested in a career in fashion. Last year, more than 3,500 students attending from 140 schools nationwide.

London, New York, Paris... Aberdeen - the Granite City isn’t often heralded as a global leader in fashion, but students from Gray’s School of Art changed that by hosting a fashion show to display their cutting-edge designs.
Lecturer Louise Buchan and fourth year Sculpture student Emily Moir co-ordinated the fashion show. Louise explained how the event came about: “It stemmed from an idea to get first year students involved in displaying their garments in a show situation, but as it grew and gathered momentum, people from all departments became involved.

Those interested in a career in fashion must initially possess an innate ability to create beautiful clothing designs and effectively communicate and manufacturer those designs. A career such as this requires more than just a love of clothing – although that is obviously an important element to the job. If these are abilities that you possess, fashion school is the next natural step in finding your place in the fashion world.

Fashion school will give you the fundamentals necessary to begin your exploration of the fashion industry. Classroom education will provide you with the basics of design including the ability to transfer what is in your head to paper or computer. Further, a fashion school will provide an education on the choosing and handling of textiles of all varieties and the sewing – both by hand and machine – and manufacturing of your design.
