A Historic Night

Shakira's

In a groundbreaking moment, Shakira, the renowned South American songstress, made history at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards by becoming the first South American artist to receive the prestigious Video Vanguard Award. This monumental achievement was preceded by a remarkable return to the MTV VMAs stage after a hiatus of 17 years. The electrifying event took place at the Prudential Center in Newmark, New Jersey, and marked a pivotal moment in Shakira's illustrious career.

Shakira's stage comeback was nothing short of sensational, as she graced the audience with a captivating 10-minute bilingual medley of her greatest hits. The medley included chart-toppers like "She Wolf," the sensational collaboration with Rauw Alejandro titled "Te Felicito," and the viral sensation "Shakira: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53" alongside Bizarrap. This dazzling performance was introduced by none other than her "Hips Don’t Lie" collaborator, Wyclef Jean.

Accepting the well-deserved honor, Shakira expressed her gratitude, particularly to the "amazing women" who had played a pivotal role in breaking industry boundaries while wearing multiple hats. She also extended her heartfelt thanks to her two sons, Milan and Sasha, aged 9 and 7 respectively, for their unwavering belief in her ability to juggle multiple roles.

In a touching moment, Shakira dedicated her award to her devoted fans, acknowledging their steadfast support throughout her career. I'm truly grateful for your unwavering support, which has been like a strong and steadfast ally in every challenge I've faced. I extend my heartfelt gratitude for standing by my side and assisting me in overcoming every obstacle.. This is for you."

Shakira now joins the esteemed list of Michael Jackson Vanguard Award recipients, a group that includes icons such as Beyoncé, Nicki Minaj, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Rihanna, Justin Timberlake, and The Beatles.

Speaking to USA TODAY, Wyclef Jean, a longtime supporter and collaborator of Shakira, described the singer's impact as a "global phenomenon" and emphasized that she defies categorization by constantly redefining Latin music.

At 46 years old, Shakira, who has previously clinched four VMAs, was nominated for four awards this year, including the coveted artist of the year and best collaboration for her chart-topping track "TQG" with Karol G. Her journey with the VMAs began in 2000 when she secured her first Moon Person trophy in the International Viewer's Choice (Latin America North) category.

Adding to her list of accomplishments, the Colombian sensation shattered records this year by becoming the first female vocalist ever to debut in the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 with a Spanish-language track. This remarkable feat was achieved thanks to her stellar performances in "BZRP Music Sessions Vol. 53" and "TQG" featuring Karol G.

It's worth noting that Shakira had previously made VMAs history in 2005 when she delivered the first-ever performance entirely in Spanish, featuring her hit song "La Tortura" with Alejandro Sanz. Her last VMAs performance prior to her triumphant return was in 2006, where she wowed the audience with her iconic single "Hips Don’t Lie," alongside the incomparable Wyclef Jean.
